A 10-year-old Houston girl reportedly played dead, grabbed her toddler brother, locked a door and called for help after she was shot and injured during a triple homicide that claimed the lives of her parents and younger sister.
The deadly attack inside the family’s apartment on Fondren Road in southwestern Houston unfolded shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.
The dead victims were later identified as Harmony Carhee, 6, Donyavia Lagway, 29 and Gregory Carhee, 35, police said.
The girl who survived played dead until the killer left and then grabbed her younger brother and locked the door before calling her grandmother on FaceTime, ABC13 reported Friday.
She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.
“I just want everybody to know my baby, she’s a hero. My baby is a hero,” grandmother Manda Lagway told ABC13 while describing her granddaughter, who remained in the hospital.
“I still can’t believe it,” Lagway said of the shocking slayings.
“The shooting call, we received it from the grandmother who was not here at the apartment,” Patricia Cantu, an assistant chief with Houston Police, said in a video statement posted online.
“This is a very, very tragic scene. We’re sending out prayers to the family,” Cantu said.
Click2Houston reported that the daughter who survived told investigators that her dad opened the door after someone knocked, and a masked man entered the apartment.
The shooter allegedly lined the family members up on a couch in the living room and started executing them, a law enforcement source reportedly told KTRK.
