Beginning Monday, April 12, motorists can expect lane closures at Route 1 and Cave Neck Road, as Delaware Department of Transportation contractor George & Lynch begins a project to improve safety at the busy intersection.
According to DelDOT Community Relations Officer Kathryn Beasley, crews will work to extend the Route 1 northbound left-turn lane to Cave Neck Road. They will also extend the Route 1 southbound left turn lane for the crossover just south of Cave Neck Road. Crews will also replace the plastic pylons in the Route 1/Cave Neck crossover with a concrete island.
The contractor’s initial work will limit disruption to lane closures only, but the road may be closed in a couple of weeks, Beasley said. There will be detour signage for motorists to follow.
Residents will have access to their homes at all times, but they may need to take the posted detour route.
DelDOT is planning to build an overpass at the Route 1/Cave Neck Road intersection in the future. The project is currently in the design phase, with construction set to begin in 2025 and be completed in 2026.
Over the last few months, crews have been performing archaeological investigations required before work can begin. More recently, well-drilling equipment has been boring for structural and infiltration tests.
