No one believes that being a parent would be an easy task. And if anyone ever told a woman who is pregnant that parenting would be simple, then they were lying totally. Not only is going through a pregnancy hard but giving birth is only the start of this challenging journey. Parents have to deal with so many things when it comes to taking care of children – and for a single mother, this can be very hard seeing as though they have to do it all by themselves.
But when a single mother abandoned her nine-month-old and her 19-month-old babies on the side of the road, she went too far. Later, 38-year-old Jennifer Westfall admitted that she left her two babies on the side of the road near Reedy Creek Elementary on October 2 because she just couldn’t handle being a mom anymore and was too tired to go on.
When she was caught, Westfall was surprised people were upset. She thought it was legal to abandon babies on the side of the road. She later said she was so tired and could not care for and raise the children on her own anymore.
Westfall did not leave until she knew her children were “safe.” After abandoning them on the side of the road near the school, she lurked in the shadows spying on the babies. She waited for a parent to come and when that person did, they looked at the abandoned children in shock and took them into the school. Only then did Westfall drive away happy that someone had taken the children in.
It didn’t take long for the school to get to the bottom of the problem. They called Child Protective Services who quickly investigated the situation and identified the children as belonging to Westfall. The children are now in the safe care of foster homes in the area.
Since the incident, Westfall has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse. The North Carolina mother was arrested on Monday and released. Her court date is next month.
When police finally caught up with Westfall, she cried and admitted everything. She said she regretted abandoning her babies but said she had to do it because she could no longer care for them as their mother.
“I feel terrible about what I did. I’ve always had my kids’ back no matter what. I was so tired. Absolutely tired,” Westfall told WAFF48. “I know that it was wrong, but I’ve always fought for my kids my whole life. I always fought for them. I fight no matter what. I always tried to do it on my own. But I just can’t do it on my own.”
Critics question why she didn’t ask for help if things were so challenging. Being a parent has never been easy but giving up is not even an option for most parents.
After she was caught, she said she thought what she did was legal.
“I have the strength to do what I need to do, but I don’t have the skills to make the income that I need to take care of my family, and nobody will hire me.”
What do you think about what this single mother did?
