Volunteers from junior football club ready to help elderly through coronavirus crisis

A band of more than 30 volunteers from a junior football club are ready to help vulnerable members of society get through the coronavirus pandemic.

Hykeham Tigers, which is based in Fen Lane, North Hykeham, has formed the Volunteer Force, which is on hand to help deliver vital supplies to the elderly, who have been urged to self isolate at home amid the health crisis.

Members of the group will also be on hand to call elderly people who may be feeling lonely at this difficult time.

Hykeham Tigers committee member Matt Moore said: “In our club we’ve got around 35 volunteers, all DBS [Disclosure & Barring Service] checked, all used to being busy on week nights and Sunday mornings, who suddenly have some extra time on their hands.

“We got together to work out what our volunteers could do for the community during this difficult time.

“We want to help out people who are in a difficult situation, whether it’s doing their shopping or having a friendly chat over the phone. There are lots of little things we can do.”

The group, which will be managed centrally to avoid duplicating efforts, will comply with the strict social distances measures which are place at present to prevent the spread of the disease.

“It’s about maintaining that gap and leaving things at the door,” said Matt.

“If people have difficulty carrying things in, we can deliver it smaller bundles.

“It’s about us supporting the community effort and we’ve got so many volunteers who are eager to help.

“As I’ve said, everyone is DBS-checked which makes a real difference. It means they’re criminal records have been checked, so it’s not just anybody coming off the street.

“People should know, if the volunteers are coming through Hykeham Tigers, that they are genuine and from a reputable source.

“It’s primarily for people in the Hykeham area but if people need help outside that area we will help where we can.”

Anyone is need of support can call 01522 904184. The line is open between 8am and 9pm.

If you are calling outside of those hours, leave a voicemail and someone from the club will be in touch.
