A mineral face mask is safe and effective immediately after a dermatologic procedure from a nonablative laser and improves a patient’s quality of life, according to study data published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Researchers sought to assess the efficacy, tolerance, patient satisfaction, and quality of life of patients using the Mineral 89 Instant Recovery Sheet Mask (M89M, Laboratoires Vichy, France) after a nonablative laser procedure. The M89M contains 89% Vichy volcanic mineralizing water as a hydrating agent and 0.4% sodium hyaluronate and is formulated as a single-use mask.
The study authors conducted 2 single-center, open-label, nonrandomized studies between January and March 2020 in Singapore and Brazil. Of the 51 women included in the analysis, 24 were from Singapore (mean age, 40 ± 2 years), and all were of Chinese origin; 27 were from Brazil (mean age, 46 ± 2 years), and 52% were White.

The M89M was applied for 10 minutes immediately after the laser procedure, once daily for the next 4 days, and then 2 to 3 times per week for the remaining 3 weeks. Evaluations were performed twice on day 0 (immediately post–laser procedure and 10 minutes after M89M application), day 1, day 5, and day 28.
In the Singapore study, the investigators observed a statistically significant (P ≤ .001) improvement of erythema as early as after the first application. Skin dryness decreased from 1.4 ± 0.7 to zero 10 minutes after M89M application on day 0 (P
In the Brazilian study, an 8.0% decrease in erythema mean score was recorded immediately after the laser procedure on day 0, followed by a 74.0% decrease on day 1 (P ≤ .001). A total of 4 patients had very mild or mild diffuse skin dryness, beginning immediately after the laser procedure to day 5, and then disappearing before the end of the study.
The M89M significantly reduced the immediate cutaneous discomfort sensation and laser procedure-related symptoms such as burning, warmth sensation, itching/stinging, and skin tightness across both studies.
Participants’ perception of the mask’s effect on their health-related quality of life, measured with the Dermatology Life Quality Index Questionnaire, improved in both studies at day 28 compared with day 0. In the Singapore study, the mean score decreased by 28.0% at day 1 (P P P = .002) improved by 76% at the final visit.
“Results from both studies show that M89 formulated as a mask reduces rapidly and significantly erythema and patient-reported symptoms, thus significantly improving 2940nm Er:YAG and 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser procedure-related sensations of discomfort, with a sustaining benefit up to 28 days post-procedure,” stated the study authors.
Limitations of these 2 studies include the absence of a control group.
