After feeling like something was off, you can imagine a woman’s surprise when she took a pregnancy test and it was positive. However, things took quite a turn when she went in for an ultrasound and learned it wasn’t a baby inside her womb.
The incident was shared over Imgur by user 0tisdriftwood, who simply explained that he had experienced a “tough week.” The pictures that followed went on to paint quite the tragic story.
Like many married couples, the two were more than excited to learn that they were adding to their family. “We were going to grow our family by one more heartbeat,” he wrote. However, as the pregnancy progressed, the man’s wife began to feel extremely ill.
After noticing that her symptoms were much different from those that she experienced while having their first baby, they decided to get things checked out – and that’s when they got bad news. At her 11-week ultrasound, doctors informed the couple that there was no baby in her womb, but rather something that “looked like a bunch of grapes.” As it turns out, it was a tumor – what’s termed a molar pregnancy to be more precise.
According to Mayo Clinic:
A molar pregnancy — also known as hydatidiform mole — is a noncancerous (benign) tumor that develops in the uterus. A molar pregnancy starts when an egg is fertilized, but instead of a normal, viable pregnancy resulting, the placenta develops into an abnormal mass of cysts.
Doctors immediately prepared to perform a DNC or “dilation and curettage” and hysterectomy if necessary to make sure they rid the woman’s body of the tumor. Luckily, a hysterectomy wasn’t needed, as the DNC was effective.
After the frightening experience, the man expressed that he was saddened by the series of events, but there was so much more to the bigger picture. “Though we didn’t get to add to our family, I am so thankful for the amazing wife and son that I currently have,” he lastly wrote.
Too often, we take life for granted these days, but instances such as these easily snap us back into place.
Sure there are things we want and desire, but the most important thing is to enjoy the love of those that surrounds us. This could have turned out much worse, but we’re so very glad it didn’t.
