Rockies draft tracker and analysis, Day 2: Colorado’s selections in Rounds 3 through 10

The Rockies made a splash on the first day of the draft, selecting Georgia slugger Charlie Condon with the No. 3 overall pick. Colorado finished out the day by taking Iowa right-hander Brody Brecht in Competitive Balance Round A and then Texas outfielder Jared Thomas in the second round.

Here’s a look at who the Rockies picked on Day 2 of the 2024 MLB Draft in Rounds 3 through 10. Day 2 begins at noon. This story will be updated throughout the day.

Round 3, No. 77 — C Cole Messina, South Carolina

As a junior for the Gamecocks this year, Messina won the Johnny Bench Award that’s presented annually to the top catcher in Division I. He was named to numerous All-American teams while leading South Carolina with a .326 batting average plus 21 homers and 71 RBIs. As those stats indicate, he can hit for average and for power. While prospect Drew Romo, currently in Triple-A, is in line to be the next franchise catcher, the selection of Messina gives Colorado projectable depth at a critical position.
