A Retford mum has returned to the unit who cared for her daughter – who weighed just 1lb 5oz at birth – with a cheque to say ‘thank you’.
Demi Scuffham went to the Special Care Baby Unit at Bassetlaw Hospital to present £450 to staff for the care they provided.
The donation was raised by Demi’s employer Nationwide Building Society and its staff and customers who all took part in a ‘guess the baby weight’ competition for a member of the team who is about to go on maternity leave.
Demi is a big supporter of SCBU following the birth of her daughter Grace who was 12 weeks early, weighing 1lb 5oz.
Grace, who turns four next month, was transferred to Bassetlaw Hospital when she was eight weeks old, stayed on the unit for four weeks and had her first bottle on SCBU.
The unit also prepared the family for life at home.

Demi and her friend Laura Holmes, whose daughter Dixie Rose spent two weeks on SCBU at the same time as Grace, have previously raised £1,850 from a charity ball and a charity fun day for the unit.
Demi, said: “My daughter and I received much-needed care and support from the staff at Bassetlaw Hospital, we can never thank them enough for all they did for us.
“We wanted to give something back and this fundraising will benefit other families who have to spend time on the unit. Thank you also to my employer, Nationwide Building Society, for choosing SCBU as their charity of the month.”
Caroline Davies, SCBU sister at Bassetlaw Hospital, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to Demi and Nationwide for this donation which will be used to buy those extra pieces of equipment and home comforts which our families really appreciate.
“Having a baby in special care can be a difficult time, families go from the excitement of having a baby to the upset of feeling they can’t do anything to help them and baby may spend weeks or months on the unit.
“It was lovely to see Demi again, we really enjoy it when families come back to visit us.”
