When he stepped into his father’s attic for the first time in 40 years, he mad a discovery that even surprised police.
A German man had just began the process of renovating the attic in his father’s home to find something no one would ever want to discover.
When the 33-year-old, whose name has not been released in police reports, was cleaning out the old attic, he came across a woman’s skeleton under a pile of leaves and straw, the German newspaper, Bild, Reported.
That’s when he called police to report the “very unusual” find. The body was lying down and wrapped in several layers of clothes.
Upon investigating further, police believe the body to be of a woman who disappeared in 1977, almost 40 years ago, at the age of 28.
The mother of three lived just three miles away from where the house was located and had a history of mental illness and disappearing.
According to police reports, she had also gone missing in 1976 for six weeks before being found in the woods.
She would have been 67 years old today, and her husband passed away just four years ago before learning the truth about his long-lost wife’s disappearance.
“A discovery of this type is a very unusual event,” a police officer told Bild in an interview.
However, authorities don’t believe there was any foul play associated to her death by the man’s father whose attic she was found in, or by anyone else.
“We assume she lay down to sleep and froze to death in the attic,” the police said in a statement.
According to The Local, the son who found the body in the attic believes he is the first person to even step foot in the room in four decades, which would make sense since no one ever discovered the body at the time of the woman’s death.
No reports have stated whether the descendants of the woman have been notified of the body being found or how long she was in the attic before passing.
