It wasn’t that long ago that a photo went around the world that appeared to show a baby with a cheek piercing. In that case, it was a manipulated photo which the mother was using as a protest against the circumcision of infant boys. But now a video has emerged that has really moved the conversation on, because it’s real — and it shows a mother getting the ears of her four-and-a-half-month-old daughter pierced.
The little girl is happy and relaxed at first, but when her head is held still and her ear lobes are placed in the piercing gun, she becomes visibly nervous.

The piercing is done in a matter of seconds and the child immediately screams in shock and pain.
A heated debate has broken out in the comments section on the video, with many people accusing the mother of child abuse, and others defending her.
The little girl does quickly quieten down and she will not remember this painful moment later in life. But is it really necessary to permanently alter a baby’s body when they’re so young?
