On a every day foundation globally, Monahan stated, 18 billion used cigarettes are discarded.

In San Diego, many of them find yourself littering our surroundings and polluting waterways.

Cigarette filters are made primarily of plastics, in accordance to Monahan, which don’t break down, posing each environmental and well being hazards.

“Marine life eat them inadvertently, thinking they’re another food source,” Monahan stated

Assembly Bill 1690 goals to curb this rising drawback, banning the sale of single-use vape products and tobacco filters, that are present in most cigarettes and cigars.

Local authorities could be tasked with enforcement, imposing fines of $500 on violators who promote these banned products.

“When you realize that less than 12 percent of Californians are smokers, that amount of pollution that is so pervasive absolutely astonishing,” stated Assemblymember Mark Stone (D-Twenty ninth District), one of the invoice’s authors.

Along with lowering the quantity of poisonous air pollution created by these filters and vape products, supporters of this laws say there could be a public well being profit as effectively.

“By removing the filter, that will actually discourage people from smoking, and perhaps even discourage them from taking up smoking as a young person,” stated Dr. Thomas Novotny with San Diego State University’s School of Public Health.

If this invoice passes, this may be a significant game-changer for a way Big Tobacco sells its products right here in California.

CBS 8 reached out to Altria Group, one of the main producers and entrepreneurs of tobacco products worldwide, together with Philip Morris. They had not returned our request for remark as of Tuesday night time.

Backers of this move, although, will not be retaining quiet.

“It is harm reduction,” Stone stated. “It is taking away a product that is proven to be dangerous to the environment.”

If this laws is handed later this year, it’s not clear precisely when it might take impact.

Similar laws banning the sale of cigarette filters can also be presently being thought of in New York State.
