To be clear … Anchorage police frown upon officers joking and taking selfies with potentially impaired drivers who flash a “white privilege card” — instead of a driver’s license — as their ID.
Yes, this is actually a thing that happened. The department just announced its findings after investigating a July incident in which the officers pulled over Mimi Israelah at 3:30 for weaving. He recorded a video, which he posted but has since deleted, featuring police officers Nicholas Bowe and Charles Worland laughing as he presented the novelty ID card.
One of the officers said it was “funny”. Many people online had a very different reaction when Israel’s video went viral — they were outraged and called on the Alaskan city’s law enforcement to do something.
As I recall, the cops said Israelah showed no signs of impairment and they didn’t ticket her – but a lot of people thought they just let her off the hook because they loved her lowdown.
If nothing else, he could have been charged with not having a driver’s license.
On Thursday, the assistant manager Sean Case said: “We know that [Facebook] The message that that message contained caused a bit of a public outcry and a lot of people saw that and didn’t like the message.”
While the two officers were found to have violated department policy, Anchorage PD didn’t go into more detail … and they didn’t say what punishment they’ll face.
Both officers are said to still be employed by the department.
