A 44-Year-Old Was Discovered Inside This 88-Year-Old Woman

The Daily Mail reports that when a woman’s intense stomach pains landed her in a hospital in Tocantins state in central Brazil she received a huge surprise.

An 84-year-old Brazilian woman who went to the hospital complaining of stomach pains had a 44-year-old fetus inside her uterus.
A hospital in the Tocantins state in central Brazil X-rayed the woman’s stomach and found a calcified “stone baby.”

The X-ray showed “the face, the bones of the arms, of the legs, the ribs, and the spine” of a fetus that died between 20 and 28 weeks.

The woman told doctors she knew she was pregnant 40 years ago. When she suffered pain during the pregnancy, she visited a witch doctor, who gave her a concoction to drink.

She said the medicine immediately made her feel better.

“Her stomach didn’t grow any more, the baby stopped moving and she thought it had been aborted,” Porto Nacional hospital gynecologist Gesneria Saraiva Kratka told G1.

The fetus died, but was not expelled from her body. When this occurs, the body covers the fetus in calcium to protect the body from the fetal corpse. The result is a “stone baby,” a condition known as lithopedion.

“It’s supernatural, but she has not had any complications,” Kratka said. “We are going to perform some new tests, scans to see more details and then we will speak with her relatives to see if they allow us to operate.”

The woman reportedly doesn’t want the baby to be removed.

In a similar case in Colombia in December, an 82-year-old woman had the 40-year-old fetus removed.

The longest case of lithopedion was documented in China in 2013. The 92-year-old woman said she was informed that the fetus died 65 years ago, in 1948, but had no money to have it removed.
