Ex-Maryland middle school teacher, 61, held for offering 14-year-old girl $200 for sex and sending lewd texts

HYATSVILLE, MARYLAND: A former middle school teacher offered a 14-year-old girl $200 for sex after meeting her outside a Salvation Army store. According to Montgomery County District Court records, the 61-year-old history teacher, Miguel Navarro, taught at Nicholas Orem Middle School in Hyattsville and was arrested Monday.

The teenager’s mother told detectives about the offer and even showed sexually offensive text messages sent to her daughter in November, the Washington Post reports. She also revealed how the teacher approached them for a ride home when she was shopping for curtains with her daughter at a Salvation Army store in Gaithersburg.

During the ride back home, he got the young girl’s phone number and even enquired about her age. Later that night, Navarro called the girl and offered to pay her for sex. According to cops, the girl told him to leave her alone. Nevertheless, Navarro continued to send text messages and the mother-daughter duo complained about it to the police in November.

After a thorough examination of the explicit text messages, dated November 15, including a request from Navarro that she send him inappropriate photographs of herself, Navarro was arrested Monday and was called for his first court appearance the next day.

The report also states that an attorney listed for Navarro, who made his initial court appearance on Tuesday, could not be reached for comment. He was held without bail on charges of sexual solicitation and other counts late Thursday.

The same report details that a Prince George’s school spokeswoman revealed Navarro began teaching American history for the Prince George’s County school system in August 2017 — at Nicholas Orem Middle School in Hyattsville — and resigned from the position in June 2019. She also said that during the time he taught, no history of inappropriate conduct has been recorded.
